Motherlode
Anya Gallaccio and Zelma Long, with the support of Thomas Dane Gallery
Thomas Dane Gallery presents Motherlode by Anya Gallaccio, a limited edition of 6 distinct bottles of Zinfandel wine. Invited in 2004 by New Langton Arts in San Francisco to create a site-specific work in Sonoma County, California, Gallacio challenged the premise of what it means to create an artwork in response to the landscape. The artist’s project is a unique attempt to produce a portrait of the county, using the primary materials of the land; it’s soil and the fruit it bears. In an ambitious collaboration with Zelma Long, one of the first female winemakers in Napa in the 1970s, the two set out to produce a series of wines that distill the essence of Sonoma. Choosing the unruly and quintessentially Californian Zinfandel grape, Gallaccio and Long harvested one tonne of grapes from 5 different appellations stretching the breadth of the county: Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley, Rockpile, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley.
Anya Gallaccio has created two editions of the five single vineyard designates and an Appellation blend. The bottles have offset labels designed by the artist and are sealed with wax matched to the soil where the vines grew. The bottles are housed in pine or redwood boxes, branded and signed by the artist.
